Making a 110V to 220V conversion cable
What you will need
- NEMA 5-15R (110V receptable)
- NEMA plug that matches your 220V wall outlet. In this guide we use a NEMA 6-20P plug, but all conversion cables are made the same way
- 6” of 12 awg wire. 12/3awg jacketed wire is preferred.
Steps
- Strip back all the wires so that they will fit in connectors on each of your NEMA plugs. Connect the ground wires between the two with one of the 3 wires in your 12/3 set. The ground lug on each plug should be colored green. If using a 12/3 set, one of the wires should also have a green jacket on it. Use that wire. Failure to use the same wire to connect these two lugs will result in an electrical hazard.
- Next connect the two silver lugs on connectors with the same wire. For these, we use the white wire.
- Next connect the two gold lugs on connectors with the same wire. For these, we use the black wire.
- Close up both connectors so no bare wires are exposed. The conversion cable is now usable.
