Making a 110V to 220V conversion cable

What you will need

  1. NEMA 5-15R (110V receptable)
  2. NEMA plug that matches your 220V wall outlet.  In this guide we use a NEMA 6-20P plug, but all conversion cables are made the same way
  3. 6” of 12 awg wire.  12/3awg jacketed wire is preferred.

Steps

  1. Strip back all the wires so that they will fit in connectors on each of your NEMA plugs. Connect the ground wires between the two with one of the 3 wires in your 12/3 set.   The ground lug on each plug should be colored green.  If using a 12/3 set, one of the wires should also have a green jacket on it.  Use that wire.  Failure to use the same wire to connect these two lugs will result in an electrical hazard.

  1. Next connect the two silver lugs on connectors with the same wire.  For these, we use the white wire.

  1. Next connect the two gold lugs on connectors with the same wire.  For these, we use the black wire.

  1. Close up both connectors so no bare wires are exposed. The conversion cable is now usable.
